Black Lungs
The documentary film “Black Lungs” tackles the issue of air pollution in Skopje, a problem which listed Macedonia’s capital among the world’s most polluted cities.
1,350 people die each year in Macedonia of consequences brought by air pollution. In 2016, half of all children that visited a doctor had respiratory problems. For years, the authorities have done almost nothing to stop the pollution.
In Skopje, additional danger lurks from a landfill of toxic, carcinogenic pesticide – lindane in OHIS, a former chemical factory within city limits,. After 40 years, the landfill is still out in the open, unprotected, only three kilometers from the city center.
